A recessed lighting fixture has got three parts. The trim, bulb and the housing. The trim is the insert seen when you look up into the fixture. The housing is the fixture that contains the lamp holder and it is the part which is installed into the system. There different types of housing such as;

IC (insulation contact) rated new construction houses which are attached to the ceiling before the ceiling surface is installed.
Non-IC rated new construction houses which have no contact with the insulating at least 7.6 cm away.
IC rated remodel housing which is used for existing ceiling and the insulation is in contact with the fixture.
Non-IC rated remodel housing which is used for existing ceiling and they do not require contact atleast7.6 cm away from the ceiling.
